about

Minneapolis-based indie/roots band Red Eye Ruby releases The Ruby EP. Channeling the soulful rock sounds of Amy Winehouse and the rhythmic roots of New Orleans, this shiny collection of originals sounds classic yet very much of this time – speaking openly about abusive relationships and the reality of working as a woman in the male-dominated music industry.

All written by frontwoman Ruby Blu (aka Liz Collin), the 8 tracks feel like a snapshot of days in her life, tracking the hope and disappointments of love (“Sunshine and Good Looking,” “Burning Sunbeams”), whimsical dreams (“Howl”) and the frustrations of not being heard and seen as a whole person (“My Name Is Ruby”). Cutting her teeth on the Twin Cities bar scene, the North Dakota native and her all-star band have become known for delivering dynamic live performances. With a vaudeville sense of the theatrical, the songs play like a short film going from a sunny romantic scene to an icky phone call to a final feminist declaration of independence. Her refrain of “I have a voice, let me speak” feels like the perfect way to end this EP, that shows Ruby coming into her own as a singer, songwriter and band leader.

Working closely with producer Matt Patrick (Jeremy Messersmith, Annie Mack, Cory Wong), Ruby recorded the tracks at The Library Studio in Minneapolis, MN, working with A-list talent like Dylan Salfer (The Dylan Salfer Band), Andrew Foreman (Davina and the Vagabonds, Reina del Cid), Rich Medek (Erik Koskinen, Mary Bue), Myra Burnette (Good Time Gals, Miss Myra and the Moonshiners), Stephen Kung (The Suburbs) and regular guitarist Mike Drager (who also co-wrote “Sin Again”). Together they crafted a colorful recording, showing a vibrant new direction for this talented band.
